My Journey to Becoming a Dermal Clinician

Helping hands at Skin Clinic Blyss

Hi, Jodie King here. I’m the founder and director of Skin Clinc Blyss. I wanted to share a bit about my journey from being a dermal therapist to becoming a dermal clinician. It’s been an incredible ride, filled with learning, growth, and a deepening passion for skincare.

Where Things Started

My journey into the world of skincare began as a dermal therapist. From the start, I was fascinated by the complexities of the skin and the science behind the treatments. Working directly with clients, I saw firsthand how the right care could transform not just their skin, but their confidence and well-being.

It was this connection, this ability to make a real difference in people’s lives, that fuelled my passion.

From Dermal Therapist to Dermal Clinician

As my career progressed, I realised that to truly excel and offer the best possible care, I needed to deepen my knowledge. This led me to enrol in the Bachelor of Dermal Sciences program at Victoria University. This degree was a game-changer for me. The program covered a wide range of subjects, including:

  • Anatomy and Physiology: Gaining a comprehensive understanding of the skin’s structure and function.
  • Dermal Science: Diving deep into skin conditions, diseases, and advanced treatment methods.
  • Pharmacology: Learning about the medications and topical agents that can enhance skin health.
  • Laser and Light-Based Therapies: Training in the latest technologies for skin rejuvenation.
  • Clinical Practice: Hands-on experience in a clinical setting, which was invaluable.

This education provided me with a solid scientific foundation and honed my clinical skills, allowing me to diagnose and treat complex skin conditions with confidence.

A Pivotal Moment

Graduating with a Bachelor of Dermal Sciences marked a pivotal moment in my career. The transition from dermal therapist to dermal clinician was both challenging and rewarding. As a dermal clinician, I can now perform more advanced and specialised treatments, offering solutions that are effective and backed by science.

With my newfound knowledge, my vision was to expand my clinic  offering personalised, evidence-based skincare treatments. I wanted every client to feel understood and cared for, with treatments tailored to their unique needs. Our clinic quickly became known for its client-centred approach, combining state-of-the-art technology with a compassionate touch.

Why Choose a Dermal Clinician?

Choosing to be treated by a dermal clinician means opting for a higher level of care. My advanced training ensures that I stay on top of the latest developments in dermatological treatments, providing you with cutting-edge solutions for your skincare needs.

It’s important to understand the differences between a beautician, a dermal therapist, and a dermal clinician. Beauticians typically focus on beauty treatments like facials, waxing, and manicures. And hold a diploma or certificate. Dermal therapists have more advanced training and can perform treatments such as chemical peels, microdermabrasion, and laser therapy and have completed an Advanced Diploma. Dermal clinicians, like myself, have a 4 year Bachelor of Dermal Sciences degree, or a  providing us with a deep understanding of skin biology, pathology, and advanced treatment modalities. This allows us to address more complex skin issues and work closely with medical professionals when necessary.

At Skin Clinic Blyss, my philosophy is all about education and empowerment. I believe that informed clients are empowered clients. Through thorough consultations and personalised advice, you understand your skin’s unique needs and how to achieve your skincare goals.
